Training on Sustainable Forest Management according to FSC Standards for Forest Owners and Service Organizations of the FSC Certification Group, Cooperative Alliance of Thua Thien Hue Province (Class 1 and 2)

As part of the AIN 8748 project in 2024, the Central Climate Change Research Center (CCCSC) and the Thua Thien Hue Cooperative Alliance (TTHCA) collaborated with FSC experts to organize two training sessions on “Sustainable Forest Management according to FSC Standards” for forest owners and service organizations of the FSC certification group in Thua Thien Hue province. Both training sessions were led by instructor Nguyen Thi Thuy Dung, an experienced expert in sustainable forest management.

Class 1: Held on September 25, 2024, in Luu Hien Hoa village, Phong My commune, Phong Dien district. The training session was attended by 42 participants (6 women and 36 men), who were forest owners from Hoa My Cooperative. The training covered common mistakes in implementing forest planting according to FSC standards, low-impact harvesting techniques, and occupational safety (OS) in the use of field tools such as brush cutters, chainsaws, and machetes. The training was divided into two parts: the morning theory session at the community hall and the afternoon practical session on occupational safety at the plantation of a member of Hoa My Cooperative.

Class 2: Held on September 26, 2024, at the office of Thuy Phuong Cooperative, Huong Thuy town, with 20 participants (2 women and 18 men) from Phu Bai, Thuy Duong, Thuy Phuong, and Thuy Phu cooperatives. The content of the session was similar to Class 1, covering topics related to sustainable forest management according to FSC standards and occupational safety in harvesting and tool usage. The morning session focused on theory at the Thuy Phuong Cooperative office, while the afternoon was spent practicing occupational safety at the plantation of a member of Thuy Phuong Cooperative. Additionally, the AIN 8748 project management board conducted surveys and assessments of large timber plantation areas in Huong Thuy town, interviewing households with large timber areas about their forest production and business plans.

Through these two training sessions, forest owners gained a better understanding of low-impact harvesting techniques and occupational safety compliance in the forestry sector according to FSC standards, contributing to sustainable forest management.
